Read Chris' Background & Experience...

Chris Tunstall is an experienced mixologist, consultant and business owner with more than a decade of experience in the hospitality industry. Starting as a craps dealer in Las Vegas, he held his first bartending job 2003, and from there he would go on to hold several management roles, work with brands and start his own company and consulting practice, A Bar Above.

In his first Bar Management roles at The General’s Daughter and The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma, California, Chris was responsible for seasonal cocktail menu design and bar operations and margins. He leveraged traditional kitchen techniques and applied them to cocktail creation, earning a nomination as a Star Chefs Rising Star in 2009.

In 2009, Chris made the move to San Francisco, as a Bar Manager and General Manager for Trademark and Elite Cafe. He quickly leveraged these roles to achieve the position of Lead Bartender at Tyler Florence’ flagship restaurant, Wayfare Tavern. He continued to focus on learning culinary techniques and operations best practices, applying them to the bar program.

2012 was also the year that Chris fulfilled one of his career goals and co-founded A Bar Above to help bring cocktail design and bar education to bartenders over the web. Here, he teaches the techniques of cocktail design, management skills and hospitality best practices. A Bar Above has since grown to include a YouTube Channel, podcast, blog, Mixology Certification program, educational seminars and private consulting practice.

His cocktail design work did not go unnoticed. His work with Karlsson’s Gold Potato Vodka was featured the September 2012 edition of Tasting Panel Magazine, and he was chosen as the San Francisco mixologist to represent Patron’s 2013 Secret Dining Society.

Leveraging his experience as the bar buyer, Chris also worked with Farallon Vodka to build a strategy and create promotional materials to support their local launch. He was also one of the few mixologists in the country asked to help launch Patron’s new product, Patron Roca in 2014.

Chris joined Diageo’s Business of Bars program in 2015, giving him the opportunity to work with more than fifty bars and restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area on a variety of topics related to bar operations. With an emphasis on business systems, his work included helping clients establish key financial metrics, streamlining and optimizing service and developing human resource programs.

Today, Chris balances his time working privately with clients across the industry and providing free educational content on A Bar Above.
