We’ve carbonated quite a few things in the past, but I realized recently we’ve never actually tried carbonating wine. Since quite a few cocktails call for sparkling wine, this felt like a perfect experiment.
Important note:
My SodaStream clearly states that it is ONLY for carbonating water. Carbonating non-water liquids will almost certainly invalidate any warranty, and should be done with extreme caution. Working with any pressurized gas can be dangerous, so attempt this at your own risk!
Will it Carbonate?
Give it a try (at your own risk!)
Step 1: Add wine to your SodaStream bottle
I found one 750ml bottle of wine fit perfectly to the SodaStream fill line.
Step 2: Carbonate!
Press the button to carbonate, and continue until your Sodastream makes its usual “buzz” to indicate it’s done. I recommend doing this slowly in short bursts, watching for signs of overflow and taking breaks if needed to let the bubbles settle.
Step 3: Release
You’ll probably want a few towels around for this, or do it over the sink!
Very, very slowly release the bottle from the Sodastream. Again, if needed stop and wait for the bubbles to dissipate. This could take a couple minutes, but it’ll drastically reduce the overflow and mess.
Tasting Notes:
I was very surprised to say it wasn’t bad! As with any time you carbonate, a slight acidity is added, but it’s not overpowering. The bubbles dissipate quickly but left my Rose very pleasantly fizzy and drinkable. I really liked it!
What should we carbonate next?
Let us know in the commets!
So is there an advantage of carbonating wine over just buying a sparkling wine?
Regarding the question: Is there a list of what you have already carbonated? The Carbonated Negroni has already been done, I assume? How about a carbonated Aviation? Seems it would fit at least thematically…
I’d say not much advantage here – the only case I can think of is if you needed a couple of ounces of sparkling wine for a cocktail but didn’t want to open a full bottle – presumably you could carbonate just a couple ounces of a wine you already had open. The carbonation definitely fell off quickly though, so the cocktail may not be as sparkling as you’d like.
Hmm, good point – we should put together a list! Great idea, I’ll see what we can do. 🙂
Thank you for the explanation. Yeah, that sounds quite reasonable.
And I would love to see that list!

Oh wow – I have got to try this! (It looks like SodaStream has launched a product specifically made for carbonating non-water liquids)
